Asm. Robert Rivas Applauds Historic May Revise Budget Proposal

Budget Includes Significant Investments in Programs Championed by Asm. Rivas, Including $531M for Climate Smart Agriculture, $500M for Farmers to Repurpose Drought-impacted Land, and $500M for the Golden State Teacher Grant Program

For immediate release:

SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Robert Rivas (D-Hollister) released the following statement on Governor Gavin Newsom’s May Revise budget proposal, which makes large investments in the K-12 system:

"Budgets are a reflection of priorities, and the governor has shown today that California prioritizes teachers. We prioritize students, and most importantly, we include students from underserved communities.

"In 2019, I introduced the Golden State Teacher Grant to help combat our state’s serious teacher shortage by luring talented K-12 teachers to work in high-need subjects and communities. I am thrilled that the Governor announced an additional $500 million for the program. This will go a long way to increase the number of teachers who commit to teach in high-need subject matters like math, science and special education, and ensure historically underserved students receive the level of instruction that they deserve.

"This pandemic has academically set kids back, and it’s our students of color who are experiencing the highest rates of learning loss. This budget proposed today will help ensure equity for all of our students, which will help California come back stronger and more resilient."
