Speaker Rivas, California Farm Bureau President Co-Author New York Times Op-Ed Urging Support for Immigrant Workers

The two leaders ask the Trump administration and Congress to implement a humane, practical, bipartisan solution to ensure a stable farm workforce and safeguard America’s food supply

For immediate release:

SACRAMENTO — Today, The New York Times published an op-ed co-authored by Speaker of the Assembly Robert Rivas and California Farm Bureau President Shannon Douglass. It calls the criminalization of lawful immigrant workers “a mistake” and urges the Trump administration to work with Congress to protect farmworkers and the future of American agriculture.

“For Americans already struggling with high prices, anything that can add to their grocery bill will be felt, but the impact of immigration enforcement doesn’t stop at the supermarket checkout line. Farms and ranches support hundreds of thousands of American jobs in food processing, packing, transportation, logistics, equipment supply and more. In 2023 alone, California’s farmers and farmworkers generated some $22 billion in agricultural exports,” the op-ed reads.

This year, Speaker Rivas has convened four immigration community meetings across California to understand how the Legislature can deliver solutions that protect businesses and families. Previous events were held in Santa AnaLos AngelesFresno and Salinas. The Speaker has also held two events focusing on agriculture, including a farm tour with US Senator Adam Schiff and community meeting with Farm Bureau President Douglass this month.
