Speaker Robert Rivas, Latino Caucus Assembly Leaders Demand Accountability for Fatal ICE Shooting in Minneapolis

An ICE agent killed a woman in Minneapolis on Wednesday, sparking outcry across the nation. Assembly leaders condemned the killing and Trump’s dangerous ICE raids.

SACRAMENTO — On Wednesday, an ICE agent dispatched to Minneapolis as part of President Donald Trump’s expanded federal immigration enforcement operations fatally shot a 37-year-old woman.

This tragedy is another display of ICE’s increasingly aggressive tactics that are terrorizing communities, sowing chaos and putting innocent lives at risk.

“Today's fatal shooting in Minneapolis, perpetrated by an ICE agent, is a sobering reminder of the indiscriminate consequences of Donald Trump’s heartless attacks on our immigrant communities. My thoughts are with the victim’s family, and my message to ICE is simple: Keep your violence and terror out of our communities in California, Minnesota and across our nation,” Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas said.

“The reports of a shooting involving ICE in Minneapolis are alarming. When incidents like this occur, they underscore the urgent need for transparency and oversight, because when enforcement turns violent, no one is safe,” said Assemblymember Juan Carrillo, Vice-Chair of the California Legislative Latino Caucus.

“ICE killed a woman in cold blood today on the streets of Minneapolis. If we allow this to go unanswered, no one is safe,” said Assemblymember Liz Ortega, Vice-Chair of the California Legislative Latino Caucus.

Time and again, the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement operations are carried out with little transparency or accountability, reckless force, and complete disregard for the safety of the people who live and work in these cities.

Families should not have to fear deadly violence from federal agents operating in their community, and neighborhoods should not be subjected to enforcement tactics that escalate harm instead of promoting safety.

Legislative leaders mourn the life lost today and stand with the Minneapolis community as they demand answers, accountability, and an end to violent and unlawful immigration enforcement practices that continue to tear families apart and destabilize communities.
