SACRAMENTO— Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas (D-Salinas) and Assembly Budget Chair Jesse Gabriel (D-Encino) issued the following statements in response to Governor Gavin Newsom’s May Revise budget proposal for the 2025-26 fiscal year:
Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas Says
“California worked to make responsible, essential budget investments in recent years, and as Speaker, I will always ensure taxpayers' dollars are spent in ways that truly benefit our residents. But the damage from Trump’s attack on America’s economy is clear: His reckless tariffs are driving California from surplus to deficit. Trump’s economic agenda is a disaster for working families — fueling higher prices, shrinking savings, and triggering cuts to health care. The Assembly will thoroughly review the Governor’s May budget revision during public hearings, and we will continue to stand up to the chaotic actions of Trump and his Republican allies.”
Assembly Budget Chair Jesse Gabriel Says
“The Governor’s budget proposal starkly illustrates that President Trump’s tariffs are a self-inflicted economic wound that will have real consequences for California families and for our state budget. While we face difficult choices ahead, the Assembly is committed to closely reviewing the Governor’s budget proposal and to working with our counterparts to craft a budget that prioritizes safety net programs, accountability, California values, and the key issues facing working families.”
Next Steps
So far this year, the Assembly has convened more than 50 public hearings on the budget, with hundreds of hours of discussion, expert testimony and community engagement. In the coming weeks, the Assembly is scheduled to convene additional budget hearings to closely review the Governor’s proposal.
