Speaker Robert Rivas Issues Statement on New Actions to Punish Child Predators and Strengthen Protections for Survivors

For immediate release:

SACRAMENTO— Today, Speaker Robert Rivas (D-Salinas) issued the following statement on new California State Assembly actions to punish child predators and strengthen protections for survivors:

"Protecting children, standing up for trafficking victims and stopping crime are among my top priorities as Speaker. California leads the nation with some of the toughest laws against trafficking, and last year Democrats made the trafficking of children a felony strike. In our state, attempting to traffic a victim is a serious crime with real consequences, and I want to make sure predators who commit these disgusting crimes are punished. We also know that the trauma doesn't end with an arrest. That's why we're committed to strengthening protections and support for survivors. I've asked Public Safety Chair Nick Schultz (D-Burbank) and Assemblymember Stephanie Nguyen (D-Sacramento) to lead this work in the Assembly through amendments to AB 379, and they have my full support."
