(SACRAMENTO) – Assemblymember Robert Rivas (D-Hollister) applauds Governor Newsom for taking action to assist federal employees in California impacted by the federal government shutdown that began on December 22, 2018. Eligible employees who are furloughed or continue to work without timely payment of their earned wages will be able to file for Unemployment Insurance (UI) through the California Employment Development Department (EDD).
“Governor Newsom is demonstrating true leadership in ensuring that federal employees’ hard work and dedication to providing vital services in California is not forgotten,” said Rivas. “California residents affected by the federal government shutdown should not have to face the difficult decisions a withheld paycheck brings.”
A dedicated website has been created by the EDD for eligible federal employees in the state to file for UI benefits. An Unemployment Insurance Application may be used to file for state UI benefits by furloughed federal employees and those who are required to work without pay. The application can be downloaded at: https://www.edd.ca.gov/pdf_pub_ctr/1101i/de1101ibd.pdf
The EDD has also established a telephone number, (855) 327-7056, specifically for federal employees. If retroactive payment is later received, employees who receive UI benefits will be notified of their obligation to repay the UI benefits received. Impacted federal employees can find further information at:

“I am glad to see California’s state government come together to support California’s federal employee residents, who through no fault of their own, are being made to experience the unfortunate consequences of short-sighted leadership,” said Rivas.
