Happy March! We’re quickly approaching spring this year!

In this March R-Guide, we celebrate Women's History Month and discuss the importance of properly installed child car seats. Finally, I share some highlights from February and announce the 62nd Assembly District Woman of the Year.

I hope you enjoy this month's R-Guide.

Women's History Month

Women's History Month

Happy Women's History Month! During this month we celebrate the contributions of women in American history, culture, and society.

Women's History Month has been observed annually every March since 1987. The beginning of Women's History Month began in a school district in Sonoma, California. During this time, women went across California to give school presentations and organized a parade that was held in downtown Santa Rosa to celebrate women.

As the popularity of the week gained attention and popularity, the idea finally reached the White House. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter would issue the first proclamation to declare the week of March 8 National Women's History Week until it was expanded to the whole month by Congress 7 years later.

Here are a couple of things you can do this month to remember and celebrate the trailblazers who have fought for equality.

  1. Support women-owned businesses
  2. Read books by women authors
  3. Listen to women musicians
  4. Learn about the history of issues affecting women
  5. Watch films created by or that are about women

Child's Car Seat Safety

Collage of Speaker Rendon's daughter and car seat event

Did you know that as many as 73% of car seats might be improperly installed? Checking to
make sure our kids' car seats are installed correctly is one of the easiest things we can do to
keep them safe on the road.

According to Safe Kids Worldwide, "correctly used child safety seats can reduce the risk of death by as much as 71%. (safekids.org/car-seat)"

Last month, my office in partnership with the California Highway Patrol hosted another successful Child Car Seat Safety Check.

Thank you to everyone who came out to the event. I hope to be able to host another safety check soon!

It was so great seeing The Actors Gang in Sacramento! Their work providing theatrical rehabilitation programs in California's prisons and juvenile facilities is incredibly meaningful. Thanks for coming by to say hi!

Collage of Speaker Rendon holding wallet and coupon, and close-up of wallet

This is a story about a wallet. When I was 20 years old, I decided I was done working warehouse jobs. I wanted to go to college. I showed up to Cerritos College armed with a Velcro wallet with a lightning bolt on it. Inside was $250 for fees and books, and a Carl's Jr. coupon. I spent $50 enrolling in classes, and planned to hit the bookstore next to buy my textbooks. But on the way- my wallet was either lost, or stolen. Campus PD told me to come back at the end of the day to see if anyone had turned it in. I waited around campus for 6 hours for the day to end.

When I came back they told me they had found my wallet and the Carl's Jr. coupon- but the cash was gone. It was a big blow. I hadn’t thought about this in a long time- until Cerritos College President recently reminded me by giving me this incredible gift. A lightning bolt Velcro wallet, complete with a Carl's Jr. coupon- and a student ID for Cerritos College. A reminder that there may be stumbles on the way to success, but you're sure to find your footing again. Thank you Dr. Fierro for this wonderfully thoughtful gift.
