Speaker's Note - Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy November! Happy Fall!

This month is always a time to embrace loved ones and show gratitude for the little things in life. So much has happened this year. I am grateful for all the successes and challenges we conquered together.

In this month’s R-Guide, I wanted to highlight all of the amazing things that happened in October in #AD63, Small Business Saturday, Anti-Bullying Week, and also wanted to share some social media highlights.

I hope everyone has a happy and healthy Thanksgiving!

Orgullo Latino

In celebration of Latino Heritage Month, my office hosted an inspirational conversation with three amazing Latino trailblazers.

Our panel included:

  • Jaime Jarrin, the Latino voice for the LA Dodgers
  • Ana Valdez, Executive Director of the Latino Donor Collaborative
  • Jose Hernandez, Latino Astronaut for NASA

This was a real community celebration and it was great to you all. ICYMI here is a highlights video of the event!

Small Business Saturday

This year, Small Business Saturday is November 26. On this day, we celebrate and support small businesses for all that they do for our communities.

Throughout California, we have so many small businesses that help our state’s economy flourish. These small businesses can include clothing stores, restaurants, and more found across the state. It is critical we support them especially during this holiday season to make sure they are not overshadowed by larger corporations.

We must support them on this day, and all year long to help see our communities thrive. Here are some amazing small businesses in #AD63:

Anti-Bullying Week

The 3rd week of November is Anti-Bullying Week. It is important to make efforts to prevent bullying in school and communities. This week is about recognizing the harmful impacts bullying has on victims’ mental health and wellbeing. Parents, school staff, and other adults can help combat bullying by talking about it, building a safe school environment, and having a zero-tolerance policy. These are key steps in creating a community-wide bullying prevention strategy. For parents, families, and educators, here are some ideas to keep in mind this week:

  • Keep communication open to talk about friends, school, and concerns. Check-in often.
  • Encourage kids to do what they love. Trying new hobbies or sports can help children gain confidence and give them the opportunity to build connections with one another.
  • Have a conversation about what bullying is and how to safely stand up to bullying.
  • Most importantly, model positive behaviors like kindness and compassion. Teaching children how to treat other people with respect is crucial to fostering healthy relationships.

Vienna tagged along with me to work this week at our filming studio. She thought it was very funny to see me "on TV."

I was excited to present the City of Maywood $3,000,000 for the Riverfront Park Renovation Project. Our communities are better when we invest in them. This is another great #SELA victory. So proud to fight for a stronger #SELA with you.
