Speaker's Note

Happy September! The Assembly has just ended its legislative session and to be back home in SELA for the next couple of months is really exciting. I love coming home and spending more time in the communities I serve.

In this month's R-Guide we highlight Latino Heritage Month, the legislature's end of session, Native American Day, a new way to save on your next internet bill and also a look at some behind the scenes of my social media in August.

Latino Heritage Month

Latino Heritage Month logo

In September we celebrate Latino Heritage Month!

Did you know that over 70% of the AD63 population is Latino?

September is when we celebrate the history, culture and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The first observation began in 1968, but became California law on August 17, 1988. The observation month of September 15 to October 15 is also significant, because it lands on the anniversary of independence for several Latin American countries.

The Latino community, through hard work and dedication, has left an imprint in every corner of this country, California, and especially AD63. Let's celebrate our Latino heritage and community not just during this month, but every day!

Follow me on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook @rendon63rd as I highlight trailblazing Latinos and their work throughout the month.

End of Session Highlights

Assembly Floor

It was the end of the legislative session last month in Sacramento. It's great to see all of the great progressive legislation that has been sent to the Governor's desk. We worked to protect reproductive rights, address climate change, support the most vulnerable Californians in our communities, and so much more.

Some of the legislation we sent to the Governor include:

AB 1621 - Helps crack down on the epidemic of untraceable 'ghost guns', and the part used to build them.

SB 54 - The country's strongest plastic pollution prevention act. This law requires all plastic packaging to be recyclable or compostable by 2032, as well as raising $5 billion from plastic industry members over the next 10 years to cut pollution, and support the communities hurt most by plastic waste.

AB 2508 - Crucial step towards providing students with access to educational counseling programs for all California students to address their mental health or academic challenges.

Make sure to follow me on my social media @rendon63rd as I highlight this year's legislative wins for all Californians!

Native American Day

Native American Day logo

September 23th this year in California is Native American Day! This day honors the cultural contributions of Native American communities in California history. In 1998, the Assembly passed AB 1953, which made Native American Day an official state holiday every fourth Friday in September.

Did you know that AD63 is on Tongva, Kizh, Chumash land?

This Native American Day I encourage you to take some time to read and engage with our District and State's Native American history.

Speaker Rendon at podium, speaking to SEIU supporters holding signs

Today I'm proud to stand with the Carpenters, SEIU, my fellow members Assemblymember Buffy Wicks and Tim Grayson, housing advocates and more in support of #AB2011.

We need more affordable housing, and we need the workers who build that housing to have good pay and fair working conditions.

Vienna hit a big milestone last night- she saw her first movie in the movie theater! We saw the DC League of Super Pets and she had a great time. I had more fun watching her than the movie.
