Speaker's Note: Summer is Coming!

June is always an exciting time of the year as Summer begins to set in. This summer will be full of hope and will have a slight taste of what was our old normal. As more folks have become fully vaccinated, the state has made significant progress into opening our businesses, schools, and economy. Our community's hard work to end COVID-19 is inspiring to say the least. We are reaching the end of one of the hardest challenges we've had to overcome. I encourage you to get vaccinated, if you have not yet.

This June R-Guide is about celebrating the persistence and passion that makes our community strong!

Congratulations Class of 2021

Congratulations to the Class of 2021! Your hard work and grit has allowed you to reach this milestone. Whether you are graduating from college, high school, middle school or pre-k, being able to say you have successfully completed another level in your education journey is not only special, but a privilege.

Let's also recognize the work of those around you who have supported you every step of the way. Without my family and friends, I would not be where I am today.

Your community is excited to see you go onto your next chapter in your lives, I am too.

Congratulations once again!

SELA Organization Highlight

I want to highlight an organization that has done amazing work here in SELA.

Based in Long Beach, the Puente Latino Association is an organization whose mission is to build healthy communities and promote education, art, and culture. They aim to foster a positive environment that gives our community the power to be united and engaged.

Since May 2020, Puente has held bi-weekly food distributions, in partnership with the Downtown Long Beach Lions Club and Ricardo's Nursery in North Long Beach, providing food to over 3,500 families and 13,000 individuals.

In 2020, I named Puente the California Assembly District 63 Nonprofit of the Year.

Puente has taken a forefront role in promoting health and security within our community, and is showing no signs of slowing down. You can learn more about Puente at or follow them on Facebook and Instagram @puentelbc.

Thank you Puente for all that you do for our community!

Art Talk: Small Business Month

May's Art Talk focused on small businesses and the ways they have incorporated art into their work. May was Small Business Month, so I took the opportunity to have this conversation with three local SELA small business owners. They were Daniel Oleveras from El Cielito Cafe, Ashley Leon Vasquez from Horchateria, and David Favela from Border x Brewing Bell.

All three of the businesses have provided SELA with some of the most popular beverages in creative ways by incorporating art and culture into every cup. During the Art Talk, we discussed how art was first incorporated into their business models, how the pandemic impacted them, and their reasoning as to why they chose to build their businesses in SELA.

Urban Orchard Project

Did you know there is an Urban Orchard Project coming to South Gate? The people of South Gate deserve more green spaces and more trees. Our kids deserve spaces where they can run, play, and just enjoy being kids. That's why I'm incredibly excited about this project from the Trust for Public Land (TPL).

This project will create a new park right next to the LA River, I-710 Freeway and the Thunderbird Villas. The park will offer a new place for the community to enjoy with recreational amenities, an orchard with fruit trees and picnic areas where folks can take a stroll or ride on their bikes.

Watch this video by TPL to learn more about the Urban Orchard Project and the great things this project would do for SELA:
