SACRAMENTO— Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Lakewood) today announced the formation of a new Assembly Committee on Emergency Management. This committee will be chaired by Assemblymember Freddie Rodriguez (D-Pomona). Assemblymember Rodriguez has more than 30 years of experience working as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), and has worked on emergency and disaster issues extensively during his time in the Assembly.
"Unquestionably, wildfires and COVID-19 have driven home the need for coordinated emergency planning. The fact that we live in earthquake country underlines that need," said Rendon. "It is also without question that Assemblymember Freddie Rodriguez has the experience and drive to guide this new committee and make it successful. We are lucky to have him."
The Assembly Committee on Emergency Management is the only standing committee in the Legislature focused exclusively on the issues of emergencies and disasters. The creation of this committee will allow for a more focused response from the Assembly to the various emergency issues facing California, including on the issues of fire prevention and suppression, emergency medical services, statewide disaster response, and emergency communication.
