Speaker Rendon Statement on Farmworker Overtime Legislation

(Sacramento) – Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Paramount) says the passage of Assembly Bill 1066, legislation to extend full overtime pay to agricultural workers, gives farm workers the respect they deserve. “Today was a victory for economic justice, just like the minimum wage vote was earlier this year,” said Speaker Rendon. “We righted an 80-year-old wrong and said that hourly workers will have the same overtime protections, whether they are picking vegetables in a field, manufacturing their containers in a factory, or selling them in a store.” Here’s more from the Speaker in this Assembly Access video. SACRAMENTO—Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Paramount) released the following statement after the Assembly approved AB 1066, legislation to extend full overtime pay to agricultural workers:

“Today was a victory for economic justice, just like the minimum wage vote was earlier this year. We righted an 80-year-old wrong and said that hourly workers will have the same overtime protections, whether they are picking vegetables in a field, manufacturing their containers in a factory, or selling them in a store.
“Overtime after eight hours is the right thing to do on behalf of the people who put food on our tables. The fact that AB 1066 is phased in will allow for the new overtime wages to be more easily planned for and absorbed by our agricultural community.”
